Enhancing Media Literacy: The Strategic Role of Civil Society Organizations in the Digital Era

Abstract

This article examines the importance of media literacy in the context of rapidly increasing
information pollution and disinformation driven by digital transformation and the diversity of
social networks. Media literacy aims to develop individuals’ abilities to accurately interpret,
question, and critically analyze media content. The study emphasizes the strategic roles of civil
society organizations (CSOs) in promoting media literacy and raising public awareness. The
definition, core components, and educational approaches of media literacy are discussed,
highlighting the growing significance of digital and social media literacy. Furthermore, the
responsibilities of CSOs in addressing manipulative content, ethical challenges, and algorithmic
influence are evaluated. Educational programs, awareness campaigns, and national and
international collaborations are examined with relevant examples. The study is based on a
qualitative research design, employing document analysis and observational findings conducted
in Sakarya. Ultimately, the article highlights the critical role of media literacy in strengthening
democratic participation, social awareness, and the protection of ethical values.
