Investigation of University Students Gender Role Attitudes, Romantic Relationship Stereotypes and Romantic Relationship Satisfaction

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the romantic relationship satisfaction, attitudes towards gender roles, and stereotypes related to romantic relationships among university students. The survey model from quantitative research methods was used in accordanca with the objectives of the study. The study included 459 university students aged 18 and older who were studying in the TRNC and had romantic relationships, selectes through purposive sampling. It has been found in a research study that the sub-dimension of students' gender role attitudes, namely male gender role attitudes, significantly and positively predicted their relationship satisfaction. It has been determined that the sub-dimension of students' attitudes towards stereotypes about romantic relationships, namely the attitude towards men's assertiveness, is a negative predictor of their relationship satisfaction. The results of this study are considered to provide information and contribute to understanding of attitudes towards gender roles assigned to women and men in society and how individuals perceive them, as well as contribute to understanding of romantic relationships. In this regard, it is recommended to prepare training programs and provide individual therapy and counseling services so that individuals can improve themselves and gain healthy communication skills in relation to relationship satisfaction during the university period.
