Abstract

Nikolay Semyonovich Leskov (1831-1895), one of the leading realistic writers of 19th century Russian literature. In his story "The Enchanted Wanderer" (Очарованный странник), which he wrote in 1873, the author presents realistic pictures of both the period of Russia and the local Russian people. Leskov reveals the cultural and ethnic diversity of Russian territories with his rich vocabulary, wide local dialect spectrum, immense knowledge, and unique literary talent. This work aims to examine the quotations and references in Leskov's work in the framework of intertextuality theory. In this context, the concept of intertextuality is defined in accordance with the arguments of prominent literary theorists in this field, including Julia Kristeva. As a result, it is observed that Leskov's references in his story particularly highlight the Russian national identity and the orthodoxy.
