Rural Development and Sustainable Tourism Opportunities: Bitlis's Apitourism Potential
Main Article Content
Abstract
Apitourism, surpassing traditional mass tourism, is emerging as an ideal alternative for tourists seeking
experiential and alternative pursuits. This form of tourism has been observed to offer visitors opportunities
to explore the world of bees while exerting significant impacts, including the conservation of natural life,
the promotion of biodiversity, and the strengthening of local economies. This study aims to evaluate the
apitourism potential of Bitlis Province and the contributions of this tourism type to regional development.
Turkey's rich biodiversity and suitable climatic conditions support beekeeping activities, while Bitlis's
geographical structure, endemic plant species, and traditional beekeeping methods render the region an
ideal destination for apitourism. According to 2023 data, Turkey ranks second in global honey production,
with Bitlis holding a 2.7% share of the country's hives, positioning it as one of the leading beekeeping centers
in the nation. This study was conducted using the exploratory research method to evaluate the apitourism
potential of Bitlis Province. Secondary data were analyzed to summarize the general situation regarding the
subject, and a GZFT (SWOT) analysis was employed to identify internal strengths and weaknesses as well
as external opportunities and threats, thereby contributing to the development of sustainable tourism
strategies. The study recommends the integration of apitourism with rural tourism, highland tourism,
nature tourism, and cultural tourism to create diversified tourism routes. It is concluded that the preparation
of an action plan for assessing the beekeeping potential in Bitlis Province from an apitourism perspective
would be significant. It is anticipated that the beekeeping potential of Bitlis Province will play an important
role in the development of apitourism and, consequently, in rural development. Bitlis's rich flora, the
geographically indicated “Bitlis Honey,” and its authentic lifestyle are identified as fundamental elements
supporting apitourism. This study, by revealing the apitourism potential of Bitlis, presents an innovative
model for sustainable tourism and regional development.
