Supported Bağdadi Domed of 19th Century İstanbul Mosques

Abstract

The dome, which was used in the overlay system of architecture of different nations in different parts of the world since the ancient ages, has been one of the most important structural elements reflecting the characteristics of Turkish-Islamic architecture. Since the 15th century, Turkısh architects have transformed the dome from the cover of the Ottoman architecture in the tradition of space and cover system in different kinds of Turkish architecture that have developed since the Karahan period. In the classical Ottoman period, the dome architecture, which reached its most magnificent structure in terms of structure and dimension with the designs of Mimar Sinan, continued to be important in the late Ottoman period buildings. The domes in which various materials and techniques such as stone, brick, wood and iron were used in construction were built in some mosques in which the wooden cover system was preferred. This technique consists of the laths which are applied to the wooden dome skeleton at certain intervals and the bonded plaster mortar applied on the surface by filling the gaps. Bağdadi domes are built with or without support. In this direction, the aim of the study is to examine the mosques with a high degree of importance and the supported domed mosques in which this technique is applied. Although the aforementioned structures are included in the existing publications, there is no sufficient and collective publication on the top cover systems of the mosques.
